    Unhappy Match function not functioning

I am trying to do some match + index functions to compare data from one worksheet to another. It appears that my MATCH function will only respond to cells which claim to hold text. As the data base has been put together by 'n' number of users, I have tried to cleared all formatting, then re-formatted the cells as numbers. A small range of cells are responding to the match...all others are returning N/A, when I can view the columns and see obvious matches. The small range of cells are registering 'true' to =istext() function. I tried formatting all cells as text, but they remain as numbers in response to =istext(). Any suggestions on how to get Match to work?

Select the column, then go to Data|Text to Columns and click Finish. That should change the formats to General.
