Grouping in a protected worksheet

I understand how to protect a worksheet and how to allow grouping (the + and - buttons), but once I protect is disables that grouping function. I have no knowledge of macros or coding - I can see that there should be a way to use those to make grouping and protection work together, but it's out of my level.... can someone break this down? I am using Excel 2010.
