There's no way to absolutely get rid of them, but you can reduce their size by turning on automatic hyphenation. That will give Word more characters to put on the line. Try this:
1. Click the Page layout tab on the Ribbon.
2. Click the Hyphenation button in the Page Setup group.
3. Select Automatic.
Also, Word doesn't justify the last line of a paragraph, so make sure you're using the Enter key to end paragraphs, not SHIFT/Enter, which puts in an end of line instead of an end of paragraph.
