    There's no way to absolutely get rid of them, but you can reduce their size by turning on automatic hyphenation. That will give Word more characters to put on the line. Try this:

    1. Click the Page layout tab on the Ribbon.
    2. Click the Hyphenation button in the Page Setup group.
    3. Select Automatic.

    Also, Word doesn't justify the last line of a paragraph, so make sure you're using the Enter key to end paragraphs, not SHIFT/Enter, which puts in an end of line instead of an end of paragraph.

    Thank you for this! I came across your post when looking through the forum for help with another issue, but your post solves another very annoying issue that I was having. Glad you shared.
