text looks odd in excel 2002 in windows 7

In windows 7 explorer i right click an photo see the date, copy paste it to excel 2002
then i tried to reformat the date, UH UH!
so i thought maybe it was text so i did the multiply by 1 trick.
still does not want to play nice!
what do i do?
i used left, mid and right formulae and found that in say may 22, 1996, it found 14 characters. 2 more than it seems to have

PS Clean(a1) does not work for this problem
 
found the the extra whatevers are in the spaces between the month and day, and between the day and year,
how do i remove them on hundreds of dates?

sadly some have an extra character at the start as well
 
the forums are to help. asking two people is better than asking one.
 
Perhaps you didn't follow the links and read the reasoning behind why it's not a good idea, or even the proper usage of it. Please do so.
