Hi all,

When I enter a text, say "Programming", Excel shows it as general instead of a text. Why please?

If you look at General format on the Home ribbon, it indicates ABC 123 no specific format.
Text is a specific format.

So when it changes to show a text or number? Whatever number (say 12) or text I enter, they are all shown as General! Isn't it odd?

Isn't it odd?
No, I don't think so.
That 12 you entered, was it 12 o'clock or 12 dollars, or did you want 6 decimal points with it?
Not knowing, Excel gives you its' best guess, which is exactly what you entered.
It's up to you if you need to be more specific.

this is interesting (I am posting this because looks like I need 5 posts before I can attach a file or post a link)

ladygaga,

Please don't post these kinds of posts. Make 5 legitimate posts and you can add your links. Or PM Administrators to discuss options.

Thanks for your cooperation.

@No s: So when Excel changes that format to text or number? For example, what text or what number I need to enter so that Excel recognizes it as text/number?
