.xls file error: is already open

Good day,

I have recently been aing issue with Excel 2013 whereby opening .xls files, I get the following message:

.xls is already open. Reopening will cause any changes you have made to be discarded.

I am running a window 10 x64 machine with 8gig RAM.

I have searched and tired all that Google has to offer and have not found a solution.

Any assistance ill e greatly appreciated.
